Drapery

Sadly missed yesterday, but was mostly theory which was covered in Bridgman, Lanteri and other reading material. I did miss out on an afternoon of arranging the fabric so was less experienced with how they felt than the others.

Even so managed about four small (A5) compositions I was happy with and the larger one eventually worked out after several attempts with different fabrics and layouts.

This was my first larger attempt, however fabric was too crinkled and distracted too much from the overall form to work from.
This was a quick side attempt that will likely be destroyed when dry.
This was the final composition I landed on, it is cotton and sprayed with a mistcoat (emulsion and water).

There’s not much to say about the drapery, took me a long to to understand and get into it, even now I doubt u have. But eventually I started to enjoy it when I found a technique that worked for what I wanted. I really wanted something to hang if something else, with a sense of weight, the flat plans of drapery interest me far more than the baroque and virtuoso layouts, with elaborate and innumerable folds. Something about making a fabric look like a fabric without the excessive use of folds appeals to me. This and my interest in expressionism and socialist realism lends my eye to broader, ‘flatter’ plans which don’t distract the views eye. As I trust the viewer.
