Drapery

Spent the morning sorting out stone, chose to do it in slate (more practice for headstone carving and final year lettering project). Found a piece of Westminster slate and used that.

Cut but not cleaned.
Drawn on design, can see where I shifted it over.

Started by chopping the outline but had to sort out some softening and wood as it was defening on the easel. Ended up moving it flat to rough everything out first anyway.

End of the day, trying to figure out best way into it and how to work the slate. Punching doesn’t seem like an option.

Nina said to get a feel for the whole thing by religiously going round the outline (see below). Said never to work into an edge and to keep my chisels very sharp, I’m keeping a diamond pad next to me while I work like with lettering. Will probably use more firesharps as I can get a much finer taper on them compared to most of my tungstens.

It’s been hard work, slate’s hard after all.

Need to find some examples of this kind of carving in slate.

V cutting the line and then slowly working into it from the background, stopping before I get there to make sure I don’t blow anything out.
