Drapery

Have found it better to work ‘out’ of the stone, off the edges not into the stone like with normal limestone. This prevents me from plucking under the layers of the slate.

Nina gave a brief demo on using riflers and carving the drapery. Should leave it square to gesture the weight and direction of the fabric etc. Showed how to use a rifler and a plaster tool to get a finish with directional lines. Briefly went over how to make some handmade tools for finishing out of old hack-saw blades.

Detailed technical drawings by Nina on tool making.

Spoke to Tom, told me to prop the slate next to still-life, noticed I need to push the centre down still. Also said I can start to get some of the curves in with a fine claw. Push in and scoop out.

End of the day.

Drawing

Had life drawing with Diane today. Will upload photos tomorrow.

Diane made it clear not to jump around and work through the flow of the form.

Putting down tone. Make sure lines are consistent and not just a scribble, use knuckles and fingers to adjust the pressure of the charcoal on the page. Don’t look for neat shading, just consistent, largest areas that describe volumes and curves. Look at the bigger picture.

What interests me when I draw? You can focus on these parts of a drawing.

Been a rough day, but work was good, head hurts.
