Raised lettering, w. John Neilson

We started by drawing an ‘I’ shape directly on the stone to learn the technique of carving a raised letter. It’s far more important to get the correct angle (45 degrees) of the chisel when cutting the outer shape as this determines the depth. make sure to leave 1/2 a mm outside the letter so you can come back and cut the final angle of the letter when you’re finished getting the depth in.

Almost finished, need to get the 63 degree angle on the top and left hand side.

After this we went over briefly proportions of roman letters using the skeleton technique that Ieuan had me do when I was with him. I was fairly happy but I completely forgot the ‘N’ is the same width as the ‘H’. Stupid mistake.

After this we went back to carving, this time doing three letters of our choice. I obviously chose CPB.

Actually happy with these letters and the CPB drawing. Excuse the messy layout.
Moved onto a flat surface for the wasting/masonry.
Almost finished (again).
