Torso Modelling

Kim spoke about ‘mental eminence’ after we’d checked out measurements. Referring to the highest point of a curve (i.e. the crest of the brow, think like the peak of a wave). However she went onto explain how we’re not guessing curves with our natural reaction, we’re learning to measure and use that as a tool to model.

We slightly exaggerated curves in the clay that appear on the model, this is to give the clay more drama. As clay can’t move and breath like flesh.

Modelling the profile of the left shoulder.

Did some more measuring and plotting points between modelling profiles.

Must remember to trust Kim’s process and not get distracted by what the others are doing. Kim is teaching us tools to us, if we listen we will learn to apply them ourselves.

We started modelling the profile of the torso after lunch a lot more, creating a very thin horizontal line where the edge of the figure is (that we can see in our spot). This is intuitive modelling, with no measuring. Training our eyes and using what we learning in drawing to apply in three dimensional modelling. Learning this method is key.

By the end of the day I started ‘back to back’ modelling, where you stand in between the clay and the model. Staring at a small area which you know the external points of (via measuring) and studying the changes of planes for five to fifteen seconds. Then you go away and model onto the clay without looking back until you have no more information to put down. Linking profiles together.

I’m happy with how it’s going, Kim is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had and always encouraging if you show her you’re listening. Now have plenty to get on with at home.

Continuing with final draft of lettering. Mostly spacing and double checking consistency between forms (this is all but finished in previous draft).

A quarter of the way through the second line.
Can see me talking to myself.

Was going to layout paper for large (seventy inch) figure however wall space is taken up by the lettering so will finish this first. Probably before the weekend.
